Muskoka in the Snowstorm

Just writing and sending a few photographs to say that I enjoyed the

Muskoka Wildlife Centre Workshop on January 28, 2012.
With the fresh snowfall that for awhile was a blizzard and the low lighting I

was pretty intimidated and worried that it would be really hard to capture
images of the animals that would be somewhat crisp (not too grainy). With

your guidance and some real good concentration on my part
I was able to get some beautiful images even with my really basic Canon

Rebel Xti & under $500 zoom lens. (I'm on a low budget...)

The animals were so beautiful. I learned a lot about

the animals from listening to the caregivers descriptions of

each animal to us during the sessions.

I was impressed with the way each session was run in regards

to safety guidelines for humans and for animals, respect to the

animals welfare as first priority and with great care by all of us.

I am so pleased that I got some images that I love because it

has already allowed me to share them with many people

who want to know more about that particular species or

those who have a passion for the environment and all its

creatures. I think my favorite was the cougar & owl but I

also greatly enjoyed the wolves. My wolf images are softer

as the lighting was pretty challenging for me so I guess I will have

to come back for another try! Practice, practice, practice...

I hope to get employment soon so I can use my vacation

time to attend the East Coast sessions you are offering and

see those awesome gannet colonies, puffins
and the fishing villages- looks like a dream photo

journey!

Ray the workshops you hold are very exciting. They give people the opportunity to photograph raptors still and in flight. Some of these raptors are hard and next to impossible to find in the wild. I have learned so much at these workshops and I continue to learn from them every time I attend.

It is also nice to meet people that have the same interest as I have and to talk to them . I enjoy the bird in flight photography, each time I get better and better and ready for when I do see one these great birds in the wild.

You offered pertinent information and tips that helped with the Snowy shoot and made my experience memorable. The venue was superb and you handled the large group skillfully. The general public does not get entry to the compounds and they don't get to photograph the Saw-whet owl, but we certainly did."

Just wanted to share with you some images that I have taken at I guess now 5 workshops that I have taken with you. Really would like to say a HUGE THANKS as I noted I am getting back into photography after 20 years and boy have things changed. Each workshop I have been able to come away with some super shots and its largely due to your guidance, suggestions throughout the various shoots, keeping the group happy maintaining sight lines and focus on customer service. You seem to make this happen seamlessly. Its hard work with different personalities and various skill levels. Congrats.

On a final note allowing me to use you favourite lens, to the detriment of your shooting, in helping me in my decisions on what equipment to purchase really speaks to the focus on your customer. I cannot thank you enough.

I would love to go on the Bella Coola trip and NFD trips and am at the moment planning to try and make it happen. Africa.... would be a dream come true to be in the company of such a great photography and host.

I just wanted to say thank you for another successful BIF workshop at the Canadian Raptor Conservancy a week ago. I really enjoy your flight workshops because of the unique photographic opportunity they offer. Being able to photograph these amazing raptors in flight up close is really something special -- something that very rarely happens in the wild.

As always I appreciate your guidance and advice. Although I've been a number of your workshops I'm always learning new things and picking up some new idea to try out. I came home with some 1400 images but have honed my keepers down to a few of my favourites -- hope you like them. I'm already looking forward to joining you again in the future.

Being my first workshop with you, I found your instruction on creative photography and knack for setting up wonderful perches, provided the group with some fantastic opportunities to capture these amazing birds. I have been following Ray Barlow’s website for at least 3 years and have enjoyed nature photography through the use of a manual 500mm f4 lens which served me well but had some limitations. I had agonized over a new long lens purchase and re-kindled an interest in the special elements which Ray has continued to place on his website.

His avian images are truly remarkable in terms of resolution, variety of subject, and unparalleled skill in documentation. When I realized that most of his photographs were obtained with a Nikon 200-400mm lens and occasional amplification with tele-extenders I decided to follow suit.

This lens has become my favorite in a variety of situations which include a recent canoe trip on the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe and lots of hobby work around Vermont where I reside. In spite of loving the lens and feeling comfortable with it in most situations, I wanted to understand how Ray can use it hand-held and obtain wonderful macro images of tiny subjects.

Most importantly, bird flight photography requires lots of practice and acquired skill, and I clearly admit that most of my best images were probably accidents, more a product of auto-focus and high speed motor drive than unbridled skill.

In early April of this year I traveled to Toronto for a several day meeting and planned to extend my stay to spend a much anticipated day one-on-one with Ray Barlow. In the weeks prior to the visit he maintained e-mail and telephone contact and helped me to understand just what we would be doing for the day. It was one of the most important photographic experiences I have had, with Ray helping me to clarify camera and lens settings for rapid sequence photography.

He understands the environment which surrounds his subjects and has become as much a naturalist as a master photographic technician. He has a unique method of finding whatever bird is in the migratory path or indigenous to his Canadian locale. He is understated and very friendly.

As I read the comments from others who have had the privilege of working with Ray either in a workshop or just some advice long distance through his website, it is apparent that everyone has the same positive experiences I have described. We spent most of the day talking about photography, finding and photographing bluebirds, and eventually locating some red-necked grebes which are indeed especially beautiful subjects.

As a physician who is involved in teaching medical students and residents on a daily basis, I am particularly interested in how others get their points across. Ray posseses a special quality that endears him to HIS students and allows them to ask whatever is on their mind without feeling intimidated or uncomfortable. I am fortunate to have been one of those students and am privileged to realize that I have a new friend who likes and understands my extracurricular passion.

Last Sunday I was on one of Ray Barlow's 'Birds in Flight' workshops. I did a rough review of my images once I was home. Out of about 400 total images, I'm down to 190 which could all be considered 'keepers'.

I got GREAT flying shots of all the birds except the kestrel, and he's so quick, just like Ray said, it takes practice. It was great seeing one so close up though. I really appreciated the 'in field' tips as to shooting position relative to the birds and camera settings. That helped immensely!

I highly recommend Ray's workshop for the instruction and the high success rate of great images. The other photographers were also a lot of fun!

First let me say I participated in one of Ray’s workshops in Nov. of ’09 and though there was an issue w/the raptor handler.....lost.....Ray not only maintained contact w/the handler to vector him to the shoot site, but he also interacted w/us, the participants, talking photography and techniques for shooting BIFs.

By the end of the day I don’t think there was one disappointed photographer due to Ray’s personality and expertise.

But the raptor shoot isn’t the reason I’m writing this testimonial; the reason is to show how Ray goes that extra step to help photographers and to thank Ray for helping me.

Back on Feb. 10th I was given the opportunity to photograph a hockey game (Feb. 20th) between U of New Hampshire and the U of Vermont for an ad group at UNH.

Having never shot a hockey game (tough indoor lighting and fast movement) I was in a quandary to what lens(es) to rent (I knew my 2 lenses weren’t suitable for the task).

I put out a couple of questions to other photographers (including Ray) who recommended fast primes and/or fast zooms.

Now remember, this is 3 months after spending a few hours shooting raptors w/Ray and I was 1 in a group of about 12.....Ray not only remembered me, he quickly started giving me in depth suggestions (link to his shots of hockey games) on how to shoot the game via emails. He also offered to call me and help me w/some post processing tricks he had learned from his experience in shooting hockey games.

To say the least, I was overwhelmed by his willingness to put aside his tasks and spend time talking me through the process.

I received an email Friday, Mar. 5th from the UNH ad group and it began with the exclamation “WOW”.....I don’t think I would have received this enthusiastic response without Ray’s help.

professional and a good (read patient) teacher. I had the opportunity to attend two of his workshops. Not only does he give uncomplicated tips about shooting and camera settings but he completely changed the way I edit my pictures in PP in just one sitting. He first came to my attention when I saw some terrific photos on Flickr.com taken by an attendee during one of his Southern Ontario workshops.

Several months later I attended workshops at Mountsberg Conservation Centre and Simcoe Ontario and, on both occasions, I was delighted with the results. During the several hours I spent with Ray, I have advanced my knowledge of my camera, of bird photography in general and of birds-in-flight photography in particular.

One month ago a guy I worked with showed me a few pics from a small 3.2 digital camera, I said Jack you like birding why don't you spend some money and buy a camera? Well , I bought the camera then Jack put me on to Ray Barlow's site, what a find . I e-mailed Ray and asked what lens might be a good fit for me his response was fast “that same night " I've learned now he is up to the wee hours almost every night.

Well from one e-mail and countless visits to his site and also "Nature Images Online Magazine", and all the links there I decided to take the
" one on one " workshop. Another plus within minutes of meeting Ray you realize you have not just hooked up with a true wildlife life photographer but a truly nice guy he gave me the opportunity to learn and shoot.

I learned more in one day than I could have done on my own in 2 years or more ( how to take the shot, how to look for the birds, how to approach and set up etc. etc.) by the time the day was over Ray had shared vast amounts of knowledge & information I started the day off as a beginner but I think Ray kicked me up a notch he improved my photography skills immensely so kick up your own skills check out Ray's workshops, my one on one was exceptional and I hope to join him for many more.

I was bitten by the wildlife/birding photography bug a couple of years ago and started reading everything I could on the subject on various photography forums. I kept running across this “Ray Barlow” guy posting incredible avian photos on various forums. What impressed me nearly as much as the incredible quality of Ray’s images was his willingness to offer suggestions and assistance to those who asked questions. I personally found Ray’s down home friendliness, candor and willingness to share his enthusiasm and knowledge refreshing in a hobby where it seems many are so secretive and not really willing to share all of their hard-earned knowledge.

So out of frustration one day last summer I sent Ray an unsolicited email for help. I have to say that I was taken aback by Ray’s response. Ray didn’t know me from Adam, but he not only answered every question I had in detail but went on to offer additional, extremely valuable tips. Over the past year we correspond frequently and I`ve attended several of his workshops which I found very cost effective and really useful for improving my photography skills.

Ray Barlow has become my “virtual mentor” as well as a friend, as almost everything that I`ve learned in this hobby was instilled by Ray – and I say that having read the works from many famous professionals such as Arthur Morris. Ray’s simple, uncomplicated common sense approaches to this hobby make sense – and just work.

So if you are looking to learn something new in this great hobby don’t hesitate to contact Ray and ask him a question or two. Aside from learning something new, you may also be lucky enough to have found a new friend in this wonderful hobby too.

After a while if you think the information is valuable enough, consider a small stipend to keep Ray in business. Relative to all the money I’ve invested in this hobby the modest contributions I’ve given Ray in appreciation for his valuable services have been - by far - the single best investment I’ve made in this hobby.

I first ran across Ray Barlow’s photos while searching wildlife photos on Pbase.com. I was just truly fascinated at the clarity and sharpness of every one of his shots, not to mention the amazing variety of subjects he shoots. Every one of his photos just had me in awe.

I got to thinking to myself “I shoot the same equipment as Ray but why are my shots not anywhere near as nice?” I knew I would like to join one of his photography workshops, but due to work commitments, I would not be able to travel. This is when I emailed Ray and asked if he’d be willing to provide an online workshop for me and possibly others who could not travel. This was one of the best things I ever did for improving my photography.

Ray’s willingness to answer any of my questions, whether it be camera settings, equipment, post processing, you name it , was just priceless to me. My amount of keepers increased tenfold. His knowledge about photography and the way he can explain it to you is just exceptional. I would recommend his online course to anyone.

I have had the pleasure of working with Ray over a long period of time. Everything I know regarding to wild life photography I have learned from Ray. He is not only expert in the subject of photography but also extremely friendly, hardworking and approachable guy.

Jon and I were the founder members of the forum. Later many nature photographers joined, including Ray Barlow.

His pictures were an immediate success on the forum. I met him in person later that year while shooting in Burlington.

We developed a friendship, shared information and knowledge and did shooting together many times. He is a great photographer and a great person. I participated in a couple of his nature photography workshops and was impressed by his friendly and professional approach. He is one of the most talented and most driven photographers I have ever met.

I ran across Ray's site while doing some research on the Internet. I emailed him and then we spoke on

the phone. I have to say that I think Ray is one of those rare talents whose workshops are an incredible

bargain...it shows in his own work. Perseverance, patience, and a down home, friendly and open personality

I was on the Holiday Beach Conservation Area web page a couple years back when I came across Raymond J.Barlow's Wildlife Photography,started browsing his work. really. I liked his style & presentation & the natural look in his work. His site was easy to navigate.

I don't remember if that's when I discovered he was hosting workshops,as I was just getting into photography, and what better way to meet this guy, that is willing to share his knowledge on getting some great shots, and even some photo-shop fine tuning after the photo shoot workshop .

I've been to 3 workshops with Ray so far, he's a great down to earth guy willing to answer any questions you have and help you the best he can in getting that great shot. Photography can be very complicated, if you sit down and read a book about it. The hands on experimenting in the field with your equipment is the knowledge I've got from Raymond J.Barlow, keep it simple. "Ray Barlow is one of the nicest guys you could ever know, his honesty and professionalism in everything he does is second to none. His wildlife photographs are world class and his knowledge on photography techniques is evident by looking through his galleries of stunning images.I have not actually met Ray in person but over the last year or so we have built up a friendship that i believe will last forever. I wish Ray every success with his ventures and look forward to joining him or maybe working with him on some of his future workshops.
